The MUHBA Plaça del Rei is the biggest of the Barcelona History Museum’s centers and contains remains of the Roman city of Barcino. During the 1930s the medieval Royal Palace was disassembled to clear a path for Via Laeitana. The Gothic royal residence was then moved stone-by-stone to its present area. During the development work to construct new establishments for the structure, archeologists unearthed the remaining parts of the old Roman and Visigoth city. There then pursued around 10 years of archeological works to revamp the castle while protecting the Roman and Medieval remains covered underneath it.
